Continuous research on new grout formulations and injection techniques is at the forefront of Sovereign’s global leadership in the development of polymer emulsion grouts for mining, civil projects, nuclear containment and other environmental applications.

Work on specialized grout products and applications begins in our laboratory and proceeds through field pilot testing. Our scientists and engineers present white papers highlighting case studies, demonstrating our creative water-sealing solutions to challenging field conditions.

For mining applications, NOH2O® has been formulated in such a way that set up times can be controlled and can be used effectively in all water types, including saline and hypersaline formation waters typically found in Australia and surrounding evaporite mines everywhere. Permeability testing in the laboratory allows direct observation of grout migration through various geologic materials and columns of water of varying density.

Civil projects demand a correlation between water-sealing and geotechnical engineering/building foundation stability. Excavation and water-sealing of new underground infrastructure (subways, sewers, etc.) must be completed in dense urban settings without ground subsidence.

In the laboratory, we observe grout migration through various geologic materials which supplement permeation grouting programs. Our scientists work side-by-side with engineering firms to conceptualize hydraulic containment systems around large excavations.

All infrastructure projects must be completed with minimal disruption to the public. Our teams perform most leak remediation work during regularly scheduled services outages provided by owners and agencies.

Recently, Sovereign has formulated grouts that are radiation tolerant. These aim to be used for the construction of groundwater containment structures. These are needed at nuclear disaster sites and long-term high-level waste storage sites. Our products are radiation tolerant and have a design life of at least 100 years.

In addition, Sovereign refining the injection methods to suit the variety of geological deposits that may be encountered in the subsurface at nuclear facilities. This includes conducting laboratory sand model research and pilot-scale field trials.
